Jeep Cherokee Limited

Side view mirror memory FIX

Before picture: Difficult to see but notice that the fingers (right end of metal) are going up (towards the printed circuit board). These metal contacts need to be removed (melt plastic) flipped over then re-melt plastic to secure.

There are two sets of metal contacts per mirror that contact this PCB. There are two PCB's per mirror one for up/down and one for left/right.

I am a technician and programmer by trade. I have owned three Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited's.

I have had this problem with my 1996 and I just fixed it on my 2001.

The problem is that the mirrors will not stay where you set them. This is a design problem from the company who designed or manufactured the mirror motor modules. The problem is that metal contact fingers/wiper that come in contact with the wiper resistor on the printed circuit board are on backwards this causes the sharp edge of the metal wiper contacts to scrape the printed circuit board (PCB) resistor (position of wiper is used to remember mirror position). The scraping can damage the PCB causing the mirror to lose position.

The fix involves opening up the motor module, removing some plastic tilt levers, removing the metal contact fingers, flip over the fingers, replace the metal fingers then reassemble.

This fix takes me about 1/2 hour per side. It could take up to 3 hours.

If my Fix helped save you some time, money and heartache please make a donation in appreciation. Thanks!

Press in top of mirror

Lift up on mirror to remove the mirror front. Just secure the mirror glass out of the way.
This round part that holds the mirror needs to be removed so that you can get to the screws.

With a blade screwdriver push the retaining clips from each quadrant. Then the middle of the round part will pull out of a scocket.
Remove the proctive rubber. Then with a T-10 torx driver remove the 4 screws securing the motor assemble and 6 screws securing the top cover.

Remove the top cover. Careful internal parts can go a flying.

This picture shows the fingers after I have fliped them over and re-melted the plastic with a small tip soldering pencil. You can scavange some plastic from an unused part of the plastic lever if needed.

Remove these two levers careful..... dn not bend the metal fingers.

Now the hard part..... you need to melt the plastic holding the metal fingers to the lever, remove the fingers flip it over then re-melt the plastic to secure the fingers. ** make sure the fingers are at the same angular position.

This picture shows hou I positioned adn held the fingers when re-melting the plastic.

Now re-assemble.

Good Luck!
